There is no such thing as a crisis-free capitalism. Yet these sometimes milder, sometimes more intense crises cannot be limited to their economic dimension. Today, for the first time in history, a global financial and economic crisis is combining with an ecological crisis and a crisis of the most elementary foundations of human life. It not only affects the inner and outer peripheries, but the very centre of neoliberal financial market capitalism itself.
Recent crises have resulted in transnational protests and left-wing upsurges, but also gave birth to the spectres of a radical Right and a new authoritarianism. The outcome of the conjuncture is open, different scenarios are conceivable. Capitalism’s periodic upheavals and crises can lead to dangerous and violent developments, but they can also open up spaces of possibility for emancipative forces. The Rosa Luxemburg Foundation is dedicated to analysing these developments both globally as well as regionally, promoting strategic debates, and translating them into basic principles for political education.
